The Board met on 25 June and considered a number of issues affecting the Club now that we are operating without the services of the Management company. The separation of the Club from the Manager has slowed somewhat because the Manager has been placed under administration and the Administrator is endeavouring to identify the assets and liabilities of that company so that its affairs can be dealt with. We are hopeful of achieving a simple settlement with the Administrator in the near future. In the meantime the appointment of Administrator to the Manager does not affect the Club in any material way.
Members will have noticed office staff working in the Member Lounge or in Shallows over the past few weeks, this is because the office at 2 Pebble Beach Avenue, owned by the Development consortium, is not currently available to us. Other arrangements are being explored, particularly the Pellos meeting room behind the tennis court on Magenta Drive, where NBN has already been connected.
With the dedicated and talented assistance of our Member Claire Martin, ably assisted by Greg Buchanan and our wonderful office staff, we have new point of sale equipment in the golf shop, bookings and on course food cart (necessitated by a change of bank providing the service) and are in the process of renewing our contracts for IT services with a view to bringing it all under “one roof”. This entails new agreements for software services such as MiClub who provide much of the services needed to run member services.
Staff - all staff previously employed by the Manager transferred to the Club under the transfer of business provisions. As we assumed responsibility for their welfare from 1 April 2025 the Club undertook a detailed review of employment conditions. The Magenta Shores Enterprise Agreement 2014 still applies to the Club (although it did not apply to the Manager over the past 9 years) and some of the staff were being paid less than the award that applies to the Club. Those staff have had their pay adjusted since 1 April 2025. In addition, the Fair Work Ombudsman announced two weeks ago that the annual increase in award rates is 3.5% and that will be applied to the payroll from 2 July 2025, along with the increase in the superannuation guarantee charge from 11.5% to 12%.
In addition, we found some staff being paid less than what your Board considers market rates and appropriate adjustments have been made for those employees. We took the opportunity to change some of the roles of employees and congratulate in particular:
Lee Akers – Director of Golf
Renay McParland – Manager – Administration and Human Resources
Hannah Boyd – Membership and Events
Business Plan – as the Club is taking on self-management for the first time in nearly 10 years, and as the records of the Manager have not been made available to us, budgets and business planning have taken longer than might be desirable. However that process is now complete and following a final Board review at the July meeting we will publish some key factors underlying the Club’s operating plan on the website under the Governance tab. The Club enters the new financial year on a sound financial footing.
Membership – at a time of some uncertainty with the separation of the Club from the Manager we anticipated hesitation in Member renewals, however that has proven not to be the case with better than recent average renewals across all categories. At the last Board meeting we were pleased to note total membership at 24 June 2025 sits at 957, compared with June 2024 of 897 members (both numbers now exclude the 30 Holding Memberships that existed under the Management Agreement). With the course condition and vibe in the Club being so positive it is encouraging to see strong membership levels.
During June we welcomed 23 new Members to the Club, as follows:
Intermediate – Gus Camden, Cory Silk, Kerrod Ferguson, Tristen Douwes, Shayden Binder and a special welcome back to Desiree Herden, on a break from Mississippi College and working in the golf shop; Junior – Will Millington, Archie Hollis, Euan Bonnar; Lifestyle – Doug Burns, Scott Henriksen, Greg Vidler, Adam Bland, Luke Bacon, Geoff Richards, David Wills, Peter Horsnell, Jill Marshall, Darren Chivas (PGA), Gary Edstein and Mentored Junior – Maverick Burns. Welcome to all our new Members.
